Oh man I keep trying to think of something to say about this outfit but my brain knows it's Friday night and it just wants to shut down and eat pizza and drink beer. So I'm gonna cut this short and go do that.

denim jacket love and new glasses

I don't think I'll ever get tired of delicate ditsy florals like this. The colours in this print are just perfect for fall, and I'll always love a good pussybow neckline. I was gifted a bunch of collars like this one and was having trouble finding ways to wear them. I think I like layering them under necklines like this. I know everyone goes nuts in the fall because they can layer again, which usually means shirts and sweaters and jackets but I'm really excited to layer up my NECK, as weird as that sounds? I mean, lots of bows and necklaces and pins and shirts buttoned all the way up. The sort of things that would have made me pass out and die in the summer heat.

I hate style "rules" and lists of style "essentials" most of the time (o you think i should own a crisp white shirt and a little black dress yawn see you in the morning) but I am a huge advocate for everyone owning a DENIM JACKET. They look good with everything, they look good plain or customized to hell, new or worn, any colour of the rainbow, in spring or fall. It took me a while to find a jacket I really liked but now I don't know what I'd do without it! I usually keep just a couple pins on my jacket, if any. Right now I have this little rose I found on the weekend.

Last week I saw a coupon code on Facebook for a free pair of glasses from Clearly Contacts and of course I jumped on that immediately. I was thinking about getting a plain-ish pair but when I was browsing these frames stole my little heart and I couldn't input my prescription fast enough. I can never just buy a normal pair of glasses, I swear! I wore these for years and years until they fell apart (because they were reading glasses with my honkin' presciption in them!)

I had to take this with the self-timer on my camera since my remote suddenly stopped working. And I was totally HELPLESS! I have no idea how I took self-timer photos all the time last winter.

Tomorrow I think I'm gonna hit up the famous 70 mile yard sale... the weather isn't going to be too good though. Last year was a really dreary day and I didn't come home with too many deals. I just can't bear to sit around at home tomorrow in case there's something really great out there and someone else buys it instead of me! haha.

If I'm gonna keep taking photos here I should probably find a new place for that bag of cat food... whoops.

I got this sweater through shopbop, thanks to a gift certificate I won on Rebecca's blog. I really like Madewell's clothing but can never bring myself to spend the money on it. I even had a hard time dropping FREE MONEY on this sweater, to be honest. I'm cutting out fast fashion as much as possible (more on that on another date, possibly) but I still find it hard to wrap my mind around the concept of spending extra money for good quality. Especially when I find boots like this at a thrift store. Ankle boot, low stacked heel, neat buckle detail, almost Rachel Comey-esque... for under ten dollars.

I don't often feel like my outfits are ever "inspired by" or "reminiscent of" something but I couldn't get "We're Going to be Friends" by the White Stripes out of my head when I wore this today. Not just because of the red, white and black, but because I'm getting really major "back to school" vibes from it. I'd probably get kicked out of the White Stripes for wearing all this brown.

I'm pretty pleased with the weather lately, although I know it won't last long. It's hovering around that magic temperature where you feel comfortable no matter what you wear. I probably didn't NEED a lightweight sweater and tights today, but I wasn't uncomfortable either.

I wore this last night to go eat tacos with some girlfriends. And then I wore it again to work today because I'm a lazy scumbag sometimes...

woman child

Every so often Jezebel posts an article about how women who wear pink and glitter and mary-jane shoes trying to be children. Maybe you've seen thisarticle in the past couple days? Sound familiar? Oh, yeah, because this. Yawn.

The attitudes expressed in these articles really stick in my craw for a number of reasons. Firstly there's the whole "damned if you do, damned if you don't" mentality. Wanna get married and have kids in your early twenties? No! Not okay! Wanna spend your twenties having fun and only being responsible for yourself? Also... not... okay? Is there a sweet spot somewhere in the mid-late twenties where it's okay to start a family? Why is this all about when someone starts a family? Why is getting married and having kids always held up as the Last Milestone of Maturity? What's so great about maturity anyway? Perhaps the author of This One Article has all the answers!

And I am tired as HELL over the whole thing about how wearing peter-pan collars or anything vaguely school uniform-esque means I'm some fragile little girl trapped in my childhood. If I wanted to be a little girl again, I'd quit my job and move in with my parents and go to bed at 8 o'clock every night with a big glass of milk. Believe it or not (even though I might be wearing knee socks) I really LIKE being an adult. There are a number of reasons why but one stands out above the others: I am taken seriously now. It's true! One of the biggest criticisms about this so-called infantilization of women is that we're not letting ourselves be taken seriously, and in my experience that is straight-up Not True. (Rebecca wrote something similar, better than I ever could.) So what's the problem?

My vacation is coming to an end and I have to say, I'm kinda glad for it. The week completely snuck up on me and I found myself with all this free time and nothing to do, so of course I did... nothing. A couple days of heavy rain kinda cramped my style as well. It was to have some time to relax but I think I'll feel a lot better once I get back into the routine of going to work every day.

Here's a tip for you: lots of thrift stores will hoard the weird vintage they get all year, and then stick it on a rack come Halloween-time for "costumes." That's how I found this skirt last week. And it was only $2.99, a total steal considering it came from Value Village. I have no idea what kind of costume this could be a part of so I guess I'll just wear it as my regular clothes...

we are never ever ever ever ever

tswifty

I'm kind of rooting for Taylor Swift. I wasn't a fan of how girl-hatey some of her previous songs were but this new one, We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, seems to be a step in the right direction. At least her rage is directed at the right person in this one. She's still catching a lot of criticism for singing about an ex-boyfriend, but... DUDE. It's a POP SONG. That's what pop music is about! Not to mention it's SUPER CATCHY and I will probably sing it at karaoke as soon as it's made available.

I'm also a huge fan of whatever her stylist is doing with her lately. The ponytail and red lipstick combo, all the polka dots and hotpants, the 50s dresses... BIG FAN. The WANEGBT video is full of cute vintage-inspired outfits. Taylor's performing on the VMAs tonight and I can't wait to see what she's wearing.

I meant to dye my hair "dark brown" the other day, but according to Garnier "dark brown" means "pretty much black." Even though it was an accident, I'm into it. I feel like the evil version of myself, like Ursula in the Little Mermaid or Taylor Swift in the "You Belong with Me" video.

I'm not usually one to wear a lot of black but I'm feeling its pull lately. I almost wore this outfit with my black pleated skirt before I felt I was going Too Far, I painted my NAILS black), I went shopping yesterday and all I came home with was this sweater, the shoes, and a bulk pack of BLACK TIGHTS. WHAT IS HAPPENING TO ME.

This is another go at dressing for fall when it's still warm out. I got this skirt at a Frenchy's the last time I went to Nova Scotia and I've been so impatient to wear it! Now that September has hit, it feels ok for me to break out the houndstooth.

Today I'm going to Fredericton, New Brunswick to help my sister move into her new digs at UNB. I've never been before!
